ROLLA, MO, DEC. 5, 2007 – Five soldiers serving in Iraq and Kuwait whose family members are employees at the Rolla office of the Department of Natural Resources are set to receive Christmas gifts from home. Thanks to the generosity of department staff, cash donations totaled $616.45.
“Our Rolla staff really opened up to the troops. It is gratifying to see our employees giving in support of our brave soldiers,” Mimi Garstang, state geologist and Division of Geology and Land Survey director said. “Our hope is that our service men and women, and especially these five, know that along with their family members and friends, total strangers care about them as well.”
Carolyn Ellis, Human Resources officer with the department said, “This is the first year that we have sent Christmas gifts to troops serving in harm’s way.” Ellis, whose son served in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan two years ago, suggested taking up the collection for the soldiers. Ellis said, “I had hoped to be able to send one box of goodies to each soldier, but to my surprise, staff donated so much money that we were able to send a total of 11 boxes. They were jam-packed too.” Some of the items that were shipped to the soldiers include snack food, gum, beef jerky, nuts, toiletries, crossword puzzles, games, phone cards and batteries.
