JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MARCH 14, 2008 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $188,000 grant to the Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute.  The institute will use the grant funds for the Jefferson Farm Water Quality Demonstration Project in the Hinkson Creek Watershed in Boone County.

The Hinkson Creek watershed is approximately 57,500 acres and is currently Missouri's 303(d) List of impaired waters.

This project will be located on a demonstration farm east of the AC exit in Columbia.  Surrounding the farm is 1,500 acres of University of Missouri Columbia property called South Farm. This area was previously used for livestock research, row crop and turf management research by the university.

The funding will be used to install and monitor best management practices to reduce erosion and chemical runoff from pesticides, fertilizers and animal wastes.  The Jefferson Farm site will demonstrate sustainable agriculture practices, including livestock pasturing, row crops, specialty crops and turf grass.  The site will also provide an opportunity to educate the public about water quality and environmentally sound land management.

The institute will provide a match contribution of $130,000 over the life of the project, bringing the total cost of the project to $318,000.  The project began Feb. 15 and runs through Aug. 14, 2010.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Region 7, through the Department of Natural Resources, has provided funding for this project under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act.   The grant will be administered by the Department of Natural Resources.  For more information, contact the department's Water Protection Program at P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, MO 65102 or call 800-361-4827 or
