JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MARCH 18, 2008 -- Emergency responders from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources were dispatched today to assist in the capture of an estimated 20 propane tanks that were washed away by flood waters in Reynolds County.
The department’s Environmental Emergency Response Section was notified at 9:10 a.m. that five residential propane tanks had been torn from their stations by a flood-swollen Pikes Creek. The department also received reports this morning of an additional 15 propane tanks in Logan Creek.
State on-scene coordinators were dispatched from the department’s Southeast Regional Office in Poplar Bluff to Winona, where one of the tanks had been lodged under the Highway 19 Bridge. The search for the remaining four tanks in and around Winona continues. One of the on-scene coordinators was redeployed to Ellington, where an estimated 15 tanks were floating in Logan Creek. The department has also deployed its environmental emergency boat to assist in rescue operations in Ellington.
The department’s Southwest and Southeast Regional Offices are working with public water systems and wastewater treatment facilities in the affected areas to determine the effects of the flooding on drinking water availability.
