JEFFERSON CITY, MO., APRIL 30, 2008 -- Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site near Ash Grove will host a living history demonstration entitled "Frontier Clean" on Saturday, May 10. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Historians Gary and Nancy Morris will be demonstrating how frontier ancestors made soap. When Greene County was first settled, pioneers couldn't run to the local super market to get soap. They had to plan ahead and gather the ingredients and cook it themselves. In addition to making soap, the Morrises will be demonstrating frontier cooking and other day-to-day activities.
Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site is located 1.5 miles North of Ash Grove on State Highway V. The site includes Missouri frontiersman Nathan Boone's hewn log home, 400 acres of scenic Ozarks farmland and Boone's last resting place. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic lunch, take a hike and learn about their frontier heritage. Regular tours of Nathan Boone's home will be available for the normal fee of $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children under 12.
