JEFFERSON CITY, MO, SEPT. 8, 2008 -- –The Missouri Safe Drinking Water Commission at a public meeting Aug. 26 at the Lewis and Clark State Office Building in Jefferson City, welcomed newly appointed Commissioner Bruce Manning of Maryland Heights.  The commission also unanimously selected Commissioner Susan Hazelwood of Columbia to serve as vice-chair for the remainder of 2008.

Commissioner Manning fills the seat held by former commissioner, Lanny Meng of Oregon, Mo, who was appointed to the Safe Drinking Water Commission in 2003.  Upon Senate approval, Commissioner Manning will serve a term set to expire Sept. 1, 2010.

The commission held an election to fill the vacant vice-chair position, previously held by Meng.  Hazelwood previously served as vice chair of the commission in 1998.  “I’m pleased to have this opportunity to serve the commission and look forward to supporting Commissioner Grove,” Hazelwood said.  Liz Grove chairs the commission.

The commission approved proceeding with a proposed rulemaking on surface water treatment and disinfection byproduct requirements.  The purpose of the proposed rulemaking is to adopt the federal Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule and Stage 2 Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule.  The proposed rulemaking will be published in the Nov. 3 Missouri Register.  The commission will hold a public hearing on Dec. 9.

The commission also approved recommendations from the staff of the Department of Natural Resources’ Financial Assistance Center on projects to fund through the Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund.  Staff also gave an overview of projects in the fall 2008 loan pool.

The Safe Drinking Water Commission is made up of nine members.  Four commission members represent public water supplies according to the number of customers they serve, and five members represent the general population.  There is currently one vacancy on the commission.  The Safe Drinking Water Commission adopts rules and regulations and advises the department on various drinking water issues.
