Field Trips and Environmental
Career Awareness Project
For Students Enrolled in High School Environmental Sciences or Studies (ESS)
The Department of Natural Resources Field Trips and Environmental Career Awareness Project provides direct, real-world experiences for high school students enrolled in ESS courses, to increase their
- Awareness of local environmental issues,
- Interest in environmental careers, and
- Understanding of the role of MoDNR in managing and protecting Missouri’s natural resources.
This project is designed as a supplement to the ESS course content through a visit to the nearest MoDNR regional or satellite office and selected field sites being regulated by that office. The project includes a natural resources education plan, so ESS teachers will be able to integrate this goal into their teaching. Two field trips are planned per month for October, November, January, February and March. Each field trip begins at the department regional or satellite office nearest the participating school. From there the class will leave for local facilities that are regulated by the department (e.g. drinking water or wastewater treatment facilities).
The program is free of charge to participating schools. The department will cover the cost of the bus rental, lunches and up to two substitute teachers. Ten such events are anticipated for the 2007/2008 school year.
Interested educators should complete the project application.
