Chillicothe's business owners have made contributions to the Chillicothe Industrial Development Corporation in return for Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program tax credits. The first project undertaken with the funds generated was the nomination of two districts to the National Register of Historic Places in order to make historic rehab tax credits available to facilitate the area's economic development. The Chillicothe Commercial Historic District and the Courthouse Square Historic District were listed on the National Register September 16, 2002.
