The center of social life in Cape Girardeau from its gala opening in November 1928 until the 1960s, the Marquette Hotel will see new life thanks to the state's historic rehab tax credits and to Governor Holden's 2001 executive order requiring new state buildings and leased facilities throughout the state to be located in downtown districts. Prost Builders, Inc. bought the deteriorating hotel in Summer 2002 and plans to turn it into retail space and offices for state agencies.
